Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream Packs Out World Cafe Live

Shane Claiborne and Ben Cohen

The Circle of Hope rock stars rolled out on Saturday night to tell the truth about militarism on the evening of the September 11 tributes. Read all about it on the CNN blog and in the Huffington Post (!!)

psalters

Or just ask any of the Psalters about BBs, Oreos, and Ben Cohen and juggled swords. (And buy one of their new albums with that great new song!). You could also just wait for Joshua and Sampugita to help finish the movie that will undoubtedly be made about the tour. Aaron had enough cameras in the room to catch every possible moment.

We have not had that much fun in the World Café basement since Jeffy and Toni had their amazing wedding reception there!

Happy Mic!

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011by sarah

Vero Ensemble

Last Friday at Broad and Washington, we reconstituted our open mic tradition as “Happy Mic” — and the mic was, indeed, happy.

Jarrod and fans

We went right up to our stated time limit (so our NA group could have their birthday party) — and there was more to be shared. The Vero Ensemble, with our birthday boy and soon-to-be cruise ship entertainer, Joshua Stauffer, was a BIG plus that we had not expected.

We want to do it again soon. So expect another invitation to Happy Mic with more refinements and a longer lead time to help you get ready.

First Friday w/AJ Rombach

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011by michael_heneghan

(At left: outside Frankford & Norris, home of FN Gallery) Our community is rich with artistic people who want to share their gifts. At Frankford & Norris, a bunch of community members formed the First Friday Team to create a gallery space (aptly called FN Gallery) within our own space at 2007-09 Frankford Avenue. Each month they host a  local artist and showcase their work.

The FN Gallery participates in First Friday, a city-wide event where galleries open their doors for free on the first Friday evening of every month. While First Friday’s largest crowds congregate primarily in Old City, the event is gaining momentum in many other neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. One of these neighborhoods is Fishtown, which is home to the “Frankford Avenue Arts Corridor”. Our own FN Gallery is an integral stop along the Arts Corridor, and a staple of Fishtown’s First Friday scene.

This past friday FN Gallery opened to the public to showcase the work of AJ Rombach. AJ’s dynamic paintings drew in crowds from around the neighborhood while the eccentric music of Matt Beck serenaded the visitors.

(At right: Doré’s Destruction of Leviathan, 68″ x 83″, Arcylic on Canvas)

AJ’s work is visceral – ripe forms and landscapes hewn into canvases with raw brush strokes that are both delicate and powerfully primal. Perhaps the most eye catching of her exhibit is a “cover” of Gustav Doré’s Destruction of the Leviathan. At an imposing 68x83inches in size, AJ has translated Doré’s engraving into a full colored drama that roars on the canvas.

Check out AJ Rombach’s tumblr, friend FN Gallery on Facebook, and be sure to stop by the space on September 2nd for the next First Friday event!

Indie Pop for Prevention Point

Monday, August 8th, 2011by sarah

Remember when I said we like to partner with other people and community groups doing cool things in our neighborhoods? We really do! In recent weeks, we, once again, partnered with our friend, Mike Brennan, a local philanthropist/concert promoter, to help raise money for Prevention Point Philly (PPP). PPP works directly with Philadelphia’s homeless population focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention.  Fun, indie pop bands, like local act, Good Luck, brought lots friends together to jam late into the evening. Overall, nearly $200 was raised to support the good (and much needed) work of Prevention Point!

Light the Night @ B&W

Friday, August 5th, 2011by sarah

We really love to partner with community groups doing great things in the neighborhoods where we gather. This week, Kathryn Snyder and some friends hosted a ”Light the Night” event to raise money to make their local South Philly neighborhood park safer at night. Revolving Spaces, a local dance troupe, that will be participating in the famous Philadelphia Fringe Festival, provided a sneak peak of what’s to come in September. There was good food, an sweet acapella ensemble, beautiful dancing, and mingling with friends new and old…all in all a successful night doing something good in the neighborhood!
