Docudialogue with the Shalom House Guidance Team

Saturday, January 28th, 2012by admin

Last Wednesday, the Shalom House Guidance Team held their first of this year’s movie nights. They screened the documentary Independent Intervention. Afterwards they explored the movie’s theme of how the corporation-owned-and-allied media distorted the coverage of the Iraq war and what that meant for the inner working of our so-called democracy in the United States.

Their deeper question was, as Jesus-folowers, so what? Now that the Iraq War is over, what have we learned about where we live and who we are. And what should we do? The questions were not all answered — no surprise. If you want to get in on the ongoing discussion, follow their website: http://shalomhouse.us/

Palestine Learning Tour Delegation Reports

Friday, January 13th, 2012by Rod White

It was one of those nights you “kind of had to be there.” One of our cell leaders said, “It was valuable to me to observe people’s reactions when I invited them to this event.  Many people were quite shocked: ‘Are you kidding me? You are actually going to spend time thinking about that?’ and then  they were intrigued that we, as a people, spend time thinking about things like this.  Very valuable. ” About 120 people had an opportunity to find it valuable. Many have said they did.

There was a lot going on in the meeting. We had an historical overview of the Israel/Palestine coexistence/conflict, instruction about illegal settlements, about the infamous separation barrier, about unequal access to resources, about house demolition,  about militarization.

We tried to keep it played out on a backdrop of hope, since the delegation met some of the most amazing people ever, in both Israel and the Palestinian Territories, who are keeping their hope and acting with peace in their hearts every day, with some remarkable results.

Hopefully, some people will comment who want to inform us about further resources and what MCC and others are doing to follow up on what we saw.

Shane Claiborne and Ben Cohen

The Circle of Hope rock stars rolled out on Saturday night to tell the truth about militarism on the evening of the September 11 tributes. Read all about it on the CNN blog and in the Huffington Post (!!)

psalters

Or just ask any of the Psalters about BBs, Oreos, and Ben Cohen and juggled swords. (And buy one of their new albums with that great new song!). You could also just wait for Joshua and Sampugita to help finish the movie that will undoubtedly be made about the tour. Aaron had enough cameras in the room to catch every possible moment.

We have not had that much fun in the World Café basement since Jeffy and Toni had their amazing wedding reception there!

The Shalom House Peace Festival Happened (For the 3rd year in a row!)

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011by sarah

In recent weeks, The Shalom House hosted their 3rd Annual Peace Festival…Over 100 people came out from across our Network of congregations and region to celebrate how peace is being made and to continue to call for peacemaking in our city and world. Tasty food was shared. Original songs of peace were performed. A honorary peacemaking award was given to Daryl and Cindy Byler of MCC Middle East.

It was a profound evening! You really had to be there. If you missed it this time around, keep your eyes out for the next one, hopefully, coming late May 2012…

So, what were your favorite memories from this year’s festival?!

Check out Shalom House’s upcoming Monthly Peace Talks on Monday June 27th at 401 S. 51st at 7:30pm, where they will be reporting on their experience walking the Migrant Trail!

Hope in Resurrection

This Easter season brings with it a hope in resurrection. We definitely need resurrection in our state, cities, schools, and on our streets.

On Good Friday, a vigil was held at Delia’s Gun Shop in Northeast Philadelphia. A few hundred gathered to express our opposition to lax regulations, which allow guns to easily make it to our streets. All we are asking is for the owner to sign a simple code of conduct, which many gun shops have already signed. The gathered people felt Christ’s suffering as some testified against the many horrors and tragedies experienced by people living in our city. It was powerful.

On Easter Sunday, Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Right now public school funding in PA is being cut by $1 billion dollars ($300 million in Philadelphia), which affects our underfunded neighborhood schools the most. As funding for education is being cut, funding for building prisons is on the rise. The state is planning on building three new prisons within the next year. We need hope in Resurrection.

Last week, Mimi and I along with 5 of her students from the Bright Lights Initiative, ventured to spend the day in Harrisburg to march, share personal stories with senatorial staff, and stand in solidarity with other students throughout the city and state. The event was rather uplifting as we expressed our discontent with the proposed budget for 2011-2012 and dreamed of a better future.

We seem to live in a backwards nation where prisons take priority over our schools. We pray that God will change the hearts of lawmakers to reverse what has been proposed for the next year.
